Chicco KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat Review – Concerns
If you are primarily considering the KeyFit 30 because it will support a baby up to 30 pounds, you should know that most children outgrow the 30″ height limit long before they reach the weight limit.
Parents comment that the fabric for the Chicco KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat is not breathable, so their baby gets hot and sweaty. Some don’t like the smell of the flame retardant chemicals used to treat the synthetic fabric. Others comment that their baby reacts to the fabric and breaks out in a rash. Chicco customer service said the Midori and Limonata were their softest, most breathable fabric choices. As an alternative, Chicco also makes the premium KeyFit 30 Magic Infant Car Seat which features “luxurious fabrics” that are softer and almost feel fuzzy.
To help eliminate the new fabric smell, give the seat plenty of time to air out before you begin using it. You can also wash the seat cover repeatedly before using it the first time. Some parents just buy an all-cotton or sheepskin cover from a third party to use over the original seat.
When installed in some cars, the latch to release the seat from the base is difficult to reach. It is at the top of the car seat, which often is pressed right up against the back of the front seat.
Like almost all infant car seats, the canopy of the Chicco KeyFit is not large enough to provide useful sun protection. If you want a larger canopy, consider the Chicco KeyFit 30 Magic which has a canopy that is a couple of inches longer and unzips at the back to open a mesh panel that extends the canopy about six inches more.
Chicco KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat Review – The Bottom Line
